Here Come the Mums
Posted by Daricia McKnight
There is a lull in the garden after the summer perennials fade. Then the weather cools and my favorite salvias bud up—pineapple sage (Salvia elegans) and Mexican bush sage (S. leucantha). Maple leaves are beginning to color and they will form a superb backdrop in just a few more weeks along with ash, oak, hickory and elm. Mexican mint marigold (Tagetes lucida) will be later still.
But it's the mums I am most excited about right now. The buds are perky polka dots of color against their green leaves. Even before they open into the daisies and pompoms we count on for weeks of color in the fall, they are cheery.
