On the garden bench this morning, and looking fierce—this leaf-footed bug. Acanthocephalus terminalis? A. femorata? I really couldn't find any pictures that looked just like this one.
His body is about an inch and a quarter long, to give you an idea of scale. (Or you can compare to the roly-poly in the top photo.)
According to my Audubon Guide, leaf-footed bugs suck plant juices and give off a foul odor when handled. I kind of hope there's a predator for this guy close by.
