Cardinal flower (Lobelia cardinalis) is just starting to bloom in my woodland garden. It is another of the plants that love rain. This one started as a volunteer in my bog bowl. Dr. M (my teacher at UNCC) told me I should pull it out, that it would take over the whole bog. But I couldn't just throw it away, could I? I told him I would wait until I got it home and plant it, which I did. I'm surprised I kept it alive the first year because we didn't get much rain, and I'm not the best at keeping consistent water on things. But it did survive, and even bloomed. This year it is more lush, but I understand they're short-lived perennials, so I'm hoping to get seeds this year. Don't you love the red?
