Unexpected Blooms

Look what's blooming at my house! My prayer plant (Maranta sp.) sent up a slender spike with pointy buds that are just beginning to open. Am I doing something especially right, or do they always bloom? More likely, I've usually done something wrong. At any rate, I've never had one bloom before. My plant sits in a southwest window with this African violet that is also showing some color.

The weather this week is in a word—AWFUL—unless you like gray and cold, but houseplants still save the day. How are things where you are?

  1. miserable and cold here in the triangle too. I got an unexpected bloom: a amaryllis that I got for Christmas two years ago and I'm pretty sure I hadn't watered it the whole winter, I did let it sit out on the deck during the summer, anyways it sent up a bud in the garage, so I brought it inside and put it on a sunny sill. I think it will open tomorrow or the next day. Can't wait.
