  1. This plant will always remind of an elderly neighbor. Her house had once been home to a fine garden, but with her age she could not keep up with it. Yet, the sweetshrub bloomed every year.

  4. We called them "sweet boobies" because Mom said she and her sisters tucked them in their bras to use as perfume. (A seasonal step up from vanilla extract.) I love them and I always think of Mom when I see them. Thanks for the great photograph.

    1. carolyn, i had a vague memory of hearing the name "sweet bubby" bush and thought it was probably a different word for the same thing, so i looked up sweet booby plant, and found this blog post, coincidentally written by a blogger i met in asheville at the fling i just went to. it's about a woman from the nc mountains who did the same thing as your mother and her sisters...interesting!
