Helleborus 'Brandywine'

Hellebores are excellent plants for Charlotte because they tolerate summer heat and drought well, they love the shade of our oak trees, and they flower early and abundantly with blooms that last for months. Despite all that, I didn't grow them for many years because, like other members of the buttercup family, they are quite poisonous and I worried about my babies chomping on one when we were in the garden. The children are older now, and poisonous has become an advantage because deer won't touch them. You know what a problem deer are around here. What a relief to find such a rewarding low-maintenance plant!
